Mr. Hoffman is admitted to legal practice in Massachusetts. He has worked as founder and principal of his fundraising consulting firm for 17 years, as part of a 25 year career in the non-profit world. He is responsible for a wide range of fundraising services, including strategic planning, fundraising programs directed at foundation, individual, and corporate donors, board development, and staff training. Mr. Hoffman regularly writes, speaks, and teaches on fundraising topics in the US and UK.

Mr. Hoffman's clients are currently evenly divided between charities in the US and the UK. In the US, these have included Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery, National Coalition for Marine Conservation, Sudbury Valley Trustees, as well as community foundations and private foundations. In the UK, his clients have included The British Library, Clare Hall/Cambridge University, The Eden Project, English Heritage, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and London Zoological Society (London Zoo). He has also worked with Canadian and Australian charities.

Mr. Hoffman has an undergraduate degree from Harvard and a law degree from the University of Maine. Before opening his fundraising practice in 1986, he was a staff fundraiser and lawyer for the Conservation Law Foundation and The National Trust for Historic Preservation.
